A South Carolina man, Richard E. Brown from Kershaw County, is taking legal action against Buc-ee’s, the popular gas station and convenience store chain, after an unfortunate incident involving their iconic beaver mascot. According to the lawsuit, Brown tripped over a rope securing a large inflatable beaver at a Buc-ee’s location in Florence County. The fall allegedly resulted in multiple injuries, particularly to his right shoulder, leading to medical expenses and significant physical and emotional suffering. Brown claims the incident has caused ongoing pain, mental anguish, and a decline in his overall health.
Lawsuit claims Buc-ee’s was negligent
The lawsuit, filed in Florence County on August 1, alleges that Richard E. Brown suffered significant injuries after tripping over a rope connected to Buc-ee’s inflatable beaver mascot. According to the suit, the incident occurred in May 2022 while Brown was walking on the sidewalk outside the Florence location. The rope, which stretched from the base of the inflatable across the street to an anchor point, caused Brown to fall, resulting in “great physical harm to the body and limbs.”
The lawsuit claims that Buc-ee’s was negligent in maintaining the sidewalk and failed to exercise “reasonable care” to protect customers from hazards. It further alleges that the store was aware of the rope’s “dangerous condition” before the incident but did not take action to fix or remove the hazard, describing the actions as careless, reckless, and willfully negligent.
According to court documents, the specific amount of financial damages Richard E. Brown is seeking has not been disclosed. Buc-ee’s has not yet provided a response to requests for comment on the lawsuit.
